Cream together the shortening and both sugars. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well in between each. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add the dry ingredients a little at a time, alternating with small additions of milk. Beat well after each addition. Add flavorings and mix well. Add the nuts if you want them.Grease and flour pans. Fill about 1/2 way to leave room for expansion. Bake at 350 for 30-40 min. Toothpick should come out clean. Leave in pans to cool until pan is cool enough to touch. You can then turn them out onto racks to cool completely.
